[A Nexus Series] Faces of Nexus: Empowering Change from Within

Meet Justin Ellis, Assistant Plant Manager: A Nexus Circular Trailblazer

In our final segment of the Faces of Nexus series, we shine a spotlight on Justin Ellis, Assistant Plant  Manager, whose role ensures the operational efficiency of Nexus’ Atlanta facility. Justin’s journey at Nexus has been filled with hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn and grow through challenges. His contributions have laid the foundation for new manufacturing systems and processes that have underpinned the growth and success of the company.

Embracing a New Industry

Justin was initially introduced to the opportunity at Nexus through a mutual connection. Intrigued by the prospect of something new and the chance to expand his knowledge beyond his previous experiences, he embraced the challenge.

His willingness to learn and adapt to the dynamics of the plastics recycling industry has been instrumental in his professional development and career growth. Justin believes in the power of advanced recycling to address the environmental impact of plastics and contribute to a circular economy, and he strives to make a positive difference in the industry.

Overcoming Challenges and Making Strides

Justin manages a broad range of responsibilities which reflects the multi-dimensional nature of his position. As the Assistant Plant Manager, he oversees inventory management and control, shipping and receiving, and plays a crucial role in operation’s permitting, compliance, and safety processes. His close collaboration with Phil, Plant Manager, optimizes the workflow throughout the facility and ensures the effective coordination of employees.

Justin noted that his true passion lies in the firsthand experience working directly with the machines and equipment that power Nexus’ operations. He recalls one of the most rewarding moments was successfully completing the initial 10-day continuous production run during the commissioning of the first commercial production line. This pivotal milestone proved the effectiveness of their processes. And this achievement by their small team demonstrated their ability to deliver results, bolstered their confidence and instilled a sense of accomplishment.

Throughout his Nexus journey, Justin and his colleagues faced various challenges in pioneering a new technology. Justin and his teammate Craig embarked on a steep learning curve to navigate the implementation of the HMI system, a computer interface crucial to controlling the manufacturing equipment and processes. Their leadership and dedication to learn the system’s intricacies enabled them to serve as key resources for training new operators and streamlining operations, resulting in improved efficiency and enhanced teamwork.

Justin attributes much of his professional growth to the supportive environment fostered by Nexus. The company’s emphasis on continual learning and personal development has provided numerous opportunities to expand his skills. Mentors like Joe Huff, VP of Operations, played a pivotal role in his development, encouraging Justin to attend leadership team retreats, where he gained valuable insights into the broader operations of the company. Nexus’ commitment to employee growth is a testament to its dedication to creating a productive and knowledgeable workforce so that people can thrive.

Building Strong Connections

What Justin cherishes most about working at Nexus is the camaraderie and vibrant culture that permeates the workplace. The relationships he has built with his colleagues extend beyond the professional realm,  fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

The Nexus team works hard, has fun, and supports one another, creating an environment where Justin feels motivated and inspired to come to work every day. The company’s commitment to preserving its unique culture ensures that Nexus remains a place where collaboration, respect, and personal connections thrive.
