November 16, 2022 – The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) is thrilled to welcome the newest member, Nexus Circular, an advanced recycling company that is accelerating plastics recycling and supporting circular solutions.
“Nexus has already been a valued partner of HPRC participating in our Advanced Recycling Pilot project in 2021,” shares Peylina Chu, Director of HPRC. “We look forward to expanding our relationship with Nexus as an official member as we continue to explore the use of advanced recycling for healthcare plastics.”
Nexus Circular is a leader in advanced recycling with a proprietary pyrolysis technology and a proven energy-efficient process. Their breakthrough advanced recycling technology converts used plastic, otherwise bound for landfills, into the highest quality, ISCC Plus certified circular liquid feedstock that is then used by strategic offtake partners to produce new virgin-equivalent plastics. They are on a trajectory to convert billions of pounds annually of hard-to-recycle plastics into circular liquids to support their global partners’ 2025-2030 plastic sustainability commitments.
“Nexus has been partnering with like-minded organizations who are investing in new technology and innovative solutions to build a sustainable world,” shares Carla Toth, SVP of Business Development and Feedstock Sourcing Strategy at Nexus. “In partnering with HPRC, Nexus will continue to work collaboratively across the healthcare plastics value chain to improve recycling rates and establish long-term economically viable and commercially scaled circular solutions.”
HPRC is currently engaged in multiple initiatives aimed at enabling recycling of healthcare plastics, including researching the applicability of different advanced recycling technologies for mixed streams of difficult-to-recycle healthcare plastics; engaging with hospitals to identify recycling challenges and best practices post-COVID; and updating our design guidance for engineers and manufacturers to improve the recyclability of healthcare products and packaging to incorporate insights and learnings from our recent work.
In Europe, HPRC is engaged in hospital barrier mapping to identify the scope/scale
of current recycling programs and barriers to recycling; researching European regulations on contaminated biohazardous plastic waste in the healthcare sector to identify possible solutions; conducting a pilot to test sorting protocol for healthcare plastic packaging waste.
